Letters: to John Canfield Spencer, 1842 Jan 9.

Ethan A. Hitchcock served on Indian duty at Fort Wayne, Indiana and his letters to the Secretary of War, J. C. Spencer, review the ill treatment of the Indian tribes by the soldiers, the wisdom of the presence of a military force, and justification of the Cherokee claims of insufficient rations and funds. In addition he advises the abandonment of Fort Wayne as it has outlived its usefulness.

John C. Spencer served as a Congressman from New York from 1817-1819, and was later Secretary of War and then Secretary of the Treasury in the administration of President Tyler.
